At the beginning of the novel, we meet an ordinary young man who was the assistant captain of the ship "Pharaoh", had a beloved fiancée named Mercedes, and lived with the goals and dreams typical of all young people aged eighteen to twenty. Accustomed to fighting danger from an early age, Dantes is unable to fight against the injustice existing in the world in any way and, as a result of a conspiracy organized by his "friends", finds himself in the castle-prison of If, from which there could be a way out only in the event of a miracle.
At first glance, it seems that this is the end, and life has reached a dead end. But being in prison completely changes the course of Dantes' life, and the meeting with Abba Faria becomes especially fateful. This wise old man, during the years spent together in prison, introduces Edmond to philosophy, mathematics, chemistry, physics, and other sciences. After passing on the intangible treasures he has accumulated over the years to the young man, Abba Faria also tells Dantes the location of the material treasures. Moreover, he does the main character a favor even in death: Dantes enters the bag intended for the old man, and the gendarmes throw him into the sea. From here begins the adventurous path of finding the treasures, returning to high society under the pseudonym of the Count of Monte Cristo, and taking revenge on all those who sinned against him for his lost youth.
