In the early 1950s, automobile racer Clerfayt visits a fellow racer in a Swiss sanatorium, who has tuberculosis. There he meets Lilian who is seriously ill. Having been contemptuous of the sanatorium’s monotonous life, strict discipline, and boredom for years, she takes the opportunity to flee with Clerfayt. The only thing that unites the two is having no future: Clerfayt only lives from race to race, each time hardly escaping death, and Lilian’s life is endangered by tuberculosis every second. They spend their short-lived lives in Paris, Rome, and Monte Carlo.
