Gorky was first familiarized with the Armenian culture in the 1890s. A significant event in the history of Russian-Armenian literary relations became the Collection of Armenian Literature published in 1916 on Gorky's initiative and under his editorship. Gorky maintained correspondence with a number of Armenian writers, such as Shirvanzade, Vahan Teryan, and others. Not long before his death, Gorky was involved in the editorial activities of the Anthology of Armenian Poetry.
Gorky's works were translated into Armenian by Hovhannes Tumanyan, Hakob Hakobyan, Avetik Isahakyan, Yeghishe Charenst, Movses Arazi, and others. His plays have been widely staged in Armenia.
