Gabriel Sundukyan is the founder of modern Armenian drama. Sundukyan’s Pepo is a masterpiece of Armenian dramaturgy, one of the most staged works in Armenian theatres. It was translated and staged in Russian, Georgian, Azerbaijani, French, Western Armenian. In his comedy Khatabala, Sundukyan described the vices of bourgeois society, in which everything is for sale, the human being included. Sundukyan wrote in the Armenian dialect of Tiflis. ​​
