This work by the 5th-century Armenian theologian and philosopher Eznik of Kolb (Yeznik Koghbatsi) is primarily devoted to refuting Persian Zurvanism. Yet, with the skill of a master debater, the author also challenges the advocates of Greek polytheism, Stoic pantheism, and Epicurean atheism, while criticizing Plato’s teachings and rejecting superstition, fatalism, astrology, and all forms of pagan belief.

At the same time, it is remarkable that the modern reader can, through this work, become familiar with the many details of the aforementioned doctrines and beliefs, comparing them with Christian understandings. This is why the book has also attracted the interest of foreign audiences and has been translated into French, German, and Russian.

The merits of Refutation of the Sects are many, and every thoughtful Armenian reader should be acquainted with them. Attached to this work are also the Admonitions of Vardapet Eznik — his sayings, which hold timeless Christian and moral value.
