The book describes the rise of the Armenian national liberation movement in connection with the events of the Russo-Turkish war (1877-1878), the siege of Bayazet fortress, and the exploits of the main character, Vardan (the colonel of the Russian army, Samson Ter-Poghosyan, served as a prototype for this character).
